On final laps the Spanish driver achieved a valuable second place at the Grand Prix of Spain, enabling him to move to the second position in the standings.
After three weeks of recess, the 2010 season Formula One returned to Europe with the Grand Prix of Spain in Barcelona, where once again the Scuderia Ferrari and Fernando Alonso were protagonists, obtaining an important second place in the fifth race of the year. The limitations of his teammates helped the Hispanic driver to advance two positions on the last laps of the race and taking advantage of their misfortunes he could stepped up to the podium gaining again the chance to stay in the competition to win the champion’s title.
The Red Bull team led the race from pole to flag with Mark Webber imposing his rhythm and taking a dominant victory. Alonso took the fourth position in the box and maintained this position during all the competition. However, by the end of the contest unforeseen incidents helped the ex-world champion. First, 12 laps before the end, the German Sebastian Vettel took an additional pit-stop in the closing stages due to brake problems and then the British Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes) who run in second position, crashed out on his final lap of the race caused by front wheels failure leaving the local idol of Ferrari on an unexpected second place.
On the other hand, Felipe Massa had an unpleasant performance. Though he added some important points at the Catalunya circuit, he never found the right rhythm to fight for the advanced positions.
The next Formula One race venue will be the Monaco Grand Prix in Montecarlo which will take place on May 16th.
